JDX Racing’s Zach Vanier became the first Porsche Sprint Challenge North America by Yokohama champion to score an overall victory in Porsche Carrera Cup North America by taking the win in round four of the championship at the F1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix.
In an incident-filled race, Vanier lept in the lead from third on the grid at the start as chaos erupted behind the pack.
Contact between Vanier’s JDX Racing teammate Madeline Stewart and series-debuting Dutchman Michael Verhagen had a concertina effect that resulted in seven cars being eliminated at the first corner.
When racing resumed, Vanier held the lead until he was briefly passed by teammate and pole winner Alex Sedgwick. The British racer gave the lead back to his Vanier as his pass had been completed with all four wheels off the circuit.
Another extended safety car period followed after contact between Elias De La Torre IV and Dan Clarke sent yesterday’s fourth-place finisher into the wall.
At the checkered flag, the Eboost Porsche Motorsport North America Junior Development Program member Vanier became the tenth winner in the championship’s history, ahead of Sedgwick and Topp Racing’s Kiwi Ryan Yardley, who earned his third podium in four starts this year.
“That was definitely not how I thought my first win in Porsche Career Cup North America would have come, but I’m super happy with it,” Vanier said.
“It’s such a cool place to get my first podium as well yesterday as my first win within the same weekend here.
“This is a really good way for us to bounce back from Sebring and now carry that momentum into my home race in Montreal.”
Moisey Uretsky took a home-town victory in Pro-am. The Baby Bull Racing ace headed MDK Motorsports’ Kenton King and yesterday’s winner Efrin Castro at the flag.
“It was definitely a bit of a short race but very exciting,” said Uretsky.
“Every single lap was important, and the restarts were vital. Miami has a great atmosphere, and I really love this race. I wish it had been a little cleaner, but it definitely made the end super exciting. I’m so happy we got first place in Pro-am.”
In the Masters class, Mark Kvamme continued his incredible run to make it six wins from six starts here. Scott Blind (Ruckus Racing) took third ahead of John Goetz (Kellymoss) who bounced back after a qualifying crash forced him to miss yesterday’s race.
“Anything that can happen in racing will happen and this race was a crazy one,” Kvamme said.
“I think we completed two or three laps. I can’t say enough about the MDK crew and, most importantly, my wife Meg for coming down and supporting me this whole weekend. It’s been a fabulous weekend and I can’t wait to go up to Montreal and do it again.”
Next up for Porsche Carrera Cup North America will be rounds five and six at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal from June 7-9.
Kellymoss racer Loek Hartog may not have been the first across the line in round three of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America, but the Dutchman was credited with victory after a penalty was imposed on pole winner Alex Sedgwick.
The JDX Racing British racer was adjudged to have changed lanes at the start of the 40-minute contest and was hit with a 10-second penalty.
Hartog started fifth on the grid and eventually made his way to second place on the road after passing ACI Racing’s Jimmy Llibre, who had “led” much of the race.
Llibre’s hopes of Miami glory came to an end after contact between him and MDK Motorsports’ Gustav Burton put the diminutive racer into the wall, bringing out a race-ending red flag.
This promoted Sedgwick’s JDX Racing teammate Zach Vanier to second place ahead of Baby Bull Racing’s Michael Cooper.
Burton was also relegated down the field after also earning a 10-second penalty after contact between him and Topp Racing’s Ryan Yardley.
“That was a crazy race for me. Qualifying didn’t go so well, but we managed to turn it into a race win,” said Hartog.
“We started P5 and stayed out of trouble and managed to carve my way through to be second across the line. About halfway through the race I was aware that the leader had a penalty so I was able to cruise behind him – overall, a good day for us.”
After winning both races here in 2023, Kellymoss’ Efrin Castro again stormed to victory in the Pro-am class. Castro was kept under pressure from teammate Jordan Wallace with Miami racer, Moisey Uretsky crossing the line in third.
“Everything went well, and we executed our plan,” Castro said.
“I had the lead in the beginning, but I lost a couple of spots, but was able to keep my head down and continue pushing. My teammate Jordan kept me honest but I kept pushing and was able to take the win.”
Mark Kvamme made it a remarkable five wins from five starts here at Miami with another Masters win. The MDK Motorsports boss won here twice in Porsche Sprint Challenge North America by Yokohama in 2022, twice in Porsche Carrera Cup North America here last year and again today.
Today’s race was not without incident. Pole winner Chris Bellomo held the lead at one point after contact between the pair. Sebring double-winner Matt Halcome finished third.
“That was quite a race. Chris Bellomo and I had a real battle,” said Kvamme.
“I also did something really stupid in the middle of the race when I was looking in my rearview mirror and didn’t see a corner and I actually dented my left side, I dented my right side in turn 16 and then Chris hit me back.
“But Chris was a real gentleman. He let me back by and he ended up second. But I gotta tell you, we had so much fun out there.”
Round four of Porsche Carrera Cup North America will be raced on Sunday at 10:30 am ahead of the F1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix.
British racer Alex Sedgwick earned his first pole position in Porsche Carrera Cup North America with the JDX Racing at the Miami International Autodrome.
After a disrupted session with an early red flag and then an early finish due to separate incidents on course, Sedgwick edged out Jimmy Llibre (ACI Motorsports) and Ryan Yardley (Topp Racing) with a lap of 1.57.164.
The British racer debut in the championship last season and finished fourth in the points after collecting three podiums in the final six rounds.
“This is my first pole in Carrera Cup – in fact, I think double pole for both races. Obviously, I’m super happy,” Sedgwick said.
“The car was incredible, and my team at JDX did a great job. It is all starting to come together. Our season feels like it’s really been started, and I’m really excited about the race today.
“In qualifying, we had a red flag halfway through the session, which was a bit nerve-wracking.
“I knew that I was in a good position, but I didn’t know whether we were going to go green again. We ended up getting back on track, and some people improved but we were lucky to hold on.”
Sebring winners Gustav Burton (MDK Motorsports) and Loek Hartog (Kellymoss) rounded out the top five.
After winning both Pro-am races last year, Efrin Castro again showcased his Miami speed to lead qualifying today. The Dominican Republic racer headed Kellymoss teammate and rival Alan Metni with GMG Racing’s James Sofronas in third.
“I’ve been working hard with Riley Dickinson working with me as my coach. He pushed me to go out and set a fast lap straight away and thank God that we accomplished that with the first set of tires,” Castro said.
“Afterwards, it got really tricky with the red flag. After we went green, we went back out on new tires and were on a good lap, but there were some fluids on the track, and we had to bail out.”
The Masters class was headed by Kellymoss racer Chris Bellomo who took pole ahead of MDK Motorsports’ Mark Kvamme – the man who won both races here in the class last year.
“I love Miami. It’s super unique and very challenging. I really like this track a lot,” said Bellomo.
“Qualifying was eventful, that’s for sure. I had some contact on the first lap and some issues. Then I did my first lap, and my second was my fastest lap.
“We went back out, and I had a really good lap going, and unfortunately, the red came out right before I was going to cross start finish.
“So that was a little bit of a bummer, but super happy and thankful for P1.”
Round three of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America will go green today at the Miami International Autodrome at 5:50 pm.
The winners of the opening rounds of the 2024 Porsche Carrera Cup North America again jumped to the top of the timesheet in today’s two practice sessions at the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix.
Kellymoss’ Loek Hartog and MDK Motorsports’ Gustav Burton won rounds one and two, respectively, last month at Sebring International Raceway.
In this afternoon’s second practice session, the two former Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup drivers were first and second in the Pro class, with Hartog setting the pace with a lap of 1:57.312.
JDX Racing’s Alex Sedgwick topped the times in the opening practice session, but the pace picked up in the afternoon, with six drivers (including Sedgwick himself) going faster than the top practice one time.
“It’s my first time here in Miami, and I absolutely love this place. It’s been a good day for us,” Hartog said.
“In the first session, I was just trying to find some rhythm – we weren’t actually focused too much on times.
“Then we tried something in the second session. I didn’t expect to go on top in terms of the tire mileage, but we managed to do that, so I’m very happy. Finishing off day one on top feels nice.”
ACI Racing’s Jimmy Llibre was third fastest in the afternoon ahead of MDK’s former Champ Car racer Dan Clarke, with Sedgwick fifth fastest in the afternoon.
In the Pro-am class, local Miami racer Moisey Uretsky was fastest in the first session, but last year’s double winner Efrin Castro jumped to the top of the pack in the afternoon.
Castro led Kellymoss teammate Jordan Wallace with ACI’s Marco Cirone third fastest.
“The team did a wonderful job. We had a really good car for the afternoon session,” Castro said.
“This is like a home track, home away from home for me because of all the Dominican fans here.
“Winning here last year was amazing. It was one of the best race weekends that I have ever had in my life and I’m planning to repeat that this weekend.”
Despite injuring his back playing golf in the lead-up to this weekend’s action, the two-time Masters class champion again proved he is a man to watch by topping the times in both sessions today.
“In the month between Sebring and now, we spent a lot of time on the cars,” Kvamme said.
“The guys have been working really hard. We found a lot of things, and we’re starting to see the benefits of their labor here.
“Gus was P2 overall, and I was fortunate enough to get P1 in practice as well. The cars are running great, and the team’s doing a fantastic job.”
Kvamme has four consecutive wins here in Miami – two in Porsche Sprint Challenge in 2022 and two last year in Carrera Cup. His MDK Motorsports team was visited today by Haas F1 driver Kevin Magnussen – throwing his support behind the Racing to End Alzheimer’s charity.
Kellymoss racer Chris Bellomo was second fastest in the class this afternoon ahead of ACI’s Sebring double winner, Matt Halcome.
Qualifying for rounds three and four of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America takes place at 12:55 p.m. on Saturday, with race one scheduled for 5:50 p.m. The final race of the weekend will be contested on Sunday from 10:30 a.m..
Porsche Carrera Cup North America is set to go racing at the first of three Formula 1 events this weekend when rounds three and four of the championship are contested at the Formula 1 ® Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix.
The stars and cars from the premier one-make series will have back-to-back Formula 1 events in 2024, with Montreal’s Canadian Grand Prix next on the schedule and the season finale again being held in conjunction with the US Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas.
The circuit in Miami Gardens, Florida, uses 19 turns to cover 3.362 miles around Hard Rock Stadium, which regularly hosts the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins. This weekend, it will host 38 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars in addition to the Formula 1 grid.
With 2023 race winner – and overall Pro champion – Riley Dickinson (New Braunfels, Texas) ascending to the next level on the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid North America, a first-time overall race winner is promised in North America’s premier one-make race series.
2023 Pro-Am and Masters (formerly Am class) race winners Efrin Castro (Dominican Republic) and Mark Kvamme (Columbus, Ohio) return to defend their twin victories in the pair of races.
Two 30-minute practice sessions on Friday, May 3, will be followed by a 30-minute qualifying session and the first 40-minute plus one-lap race on Saturday. The second race will take place ahead of the Formula 1 ® feature race on the morning of Sunday, May 4.

Thirty-eight cars are entered for the second of eight weekends of the 2024 Porsche Carrera Cup North America, and each entry will have to compromise in the paddock, pit lane, and on the track. Unable to have their race transporters and awnings to work from, teams will need to be very calculated in planning the tools and equipment they bring into the shared paddock facilities at the track. This holds true for Yokohama Tire and Porsche Motorsport North America as well. Both must also plan to the final detail what they bring into the paddock to supply the teams for the full weekend.
Hometown heroes.
Five drivers on the entry list consider Florida their home state. Angel Benitez, Moisey Uretsky, and David Tuaty all call Miami home. Elias De La Torre lives in nearby Key Largo while Carlos De Quesada lives in Tampa. Two drivers, Jimmy Libre and Efrin Castro, are residents of the Dominican Republic, making Miami their “home” track.

Situated outside the footprint of the Formula 1 ® paddock, the Porsche Carrera Cup North America paddock is open to any holder of a General Admissions ticket to the Grand Prix. Fans can walk through and watch the 38 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars being prepared for each practice, qualifying, and the pair of races.
New names.
A changing of the guard was apparent in the top Pro class at the Sebring season opener. With 2021 champion Seb Priaulx as well as 2022 champ Parker Thompson now racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and 2023 champion and defending Miami race winner Riley Dickinson now competing in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, a new Pro champion will be awarded the Al Holbert Trophy in 2024. New faces stood atop the podium at both rounds in Sebring. Loek Hartog (Netherlands) raced to his first race win in the series in round one at Sebring, while Gustav Burton (United Kingdom) drove to his first win in round two.
To the point.
Gustavo (Gus) Burton of the United Kingdom comes into rounds three and four with a narrow one-point lead (47 – 46) over Loek Hartog (Netherlands) in the Pro class and the Porsche EBOOST North America Junior Program standings. That battle extends to the Team standings, where three points (45 – 42) separates MDK Motorsports and Kellymoss. Marco Cirone (Canada) holds the Pro-Am class points lead over James Sofronas (Villa Park, California) 40 markers to 33. Matt Halcome (Dallas, Georgia) returns to Carrera Cup after a season focused on the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America by Yokohama with two race wins at Sebring International Raceway in March. The 18-point margin he holds over Chris Bellomo (Portola Valley, California) is the widest in any category in the series.
Master racer.
After two rounds, only one driver, regardless of class, swept the weekend at Sebring: Matt Halcome (Dallas, Georgia). The 2021 Pro-Am 991 class champion, and driver of the popular Mystery Machine liveried No. 55 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, returned to the series in style winning both races in the competitive Masters class. He also captured the fastest race lap for both rounds.
Endurance Challenge.
With the overwhelming success of its one-make championships and the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid North America, Porsche Motorsport North America announced the next evolution in one-make racing for the continent, the Porsche Endurance Challenge North America. The four-event championship will include three 60-minute races and a single six-hour endurance race. The new race series will debut at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas on May 26, 2024, and conclude at the Texas track on November 22. Each round will feature a top category for the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car (type 992 and 991.2) and a class for the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport.
Racing for Children’s.
The Porsche Sprint Challenge North America by Yokohama was the support series for the IndyCar Series event at Barber Motorsports Park, April 26 – 28. The event supports the Racing for Children’s, a name familiar to one-make race fans for its beloved “hand print” livery Kellymoss entries have carried for years in Carrera Cup. On-site supporting were three drivers of the Racing For Children’s livery since 2021: Kay van Berlo (2021 – 2022), Riley Dickinson (2023) and Loek Hartog. Efrin Castro raced in the pair of Sprint Challenge rounds at Barber in a Racing For Children’s livery earning an overall second place in race one and a fourth place result in race two.
Chambers in Miami.
Porsche Sprint Challenge North America by Yokohama regular Chloe Chambers (Fort Wayne, Indiana) will be in Miami for the Grand Prix weekend. However, the 19-year-old will not be behind the wheel of a Porsche. Instead, Chambers will be piloting the No. 14 Campos Racing entry in the F1 Academy series. She comes to Miami off twin Sprint Challenge Cayman class victories at Barber Motorsports Park in the No. 77 TPC Racing Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport.
ACI Motorsports has been a regular contender aboard Porsche machinery in multiple series across the US, but for 2024, the Curt Swearingin-owned team is stepping up to a whole new level.
Swearingin was behind the wheel with ACI when the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Championship was launched in 2021. In the following years, they have run up to four cars in the series but have made the leap to seven cars in 2024 – including its first entry into the Pro class.
Last year, the team added Fanatec GT World Challenge and GT4 America programs to their schedule. This year, Swearingin will again compete in GT4 America with Porsche Motorsport North America Selected Driver Kay van Berlo as well as contesting the single-driver GT America championship.
He has already been collecting trophies in 2024 – taking second place with van Berlo in GT4 Pro-Am at Sonoma and finishing third in the GT4 class in GT America last weekend on the streets of Long Beach.
Next weekend in Florida, the ACI squad faces a unique logistical challenge. While the team’s seven Carrera Cup machines are in action at the Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix, Swearingin and van Berlo will also be racing 155 miles away at Sebring International Raceway on the same weekend in the two SRO series.
“Running multiple cars is usually not that bad, but when you have two separate series running in the same state at the same time, that’s a much bigger challenge with equipment and personnel,” Swearingin said.
“We’re just going to try to do our best like always and try to perform at the highest level we can.
“We have a really strong showing in Carrera Cup this year which is awesome – and running a Pro car for the very first time. Carrera Cup is one of my favorite places to be and I think I’ll end up back there racing a car myself one day.”
ACI’s line-up for 2024 includes Jimmy Llibre in Pro; Marco Cirone, Roberto Tutino, and Pedro Torres in Pro-am, and a Masters line-up which features Matt Halcome, Richard Edge, and Tom Balames.
After the opening rounds of the season at Sebring, two ACI drivers lead their respective championships – Cirone in Pro-Am and Halcome in Masters.
Swearingin’s stepfather was in the military, and the future racer developed his passion for the Porsche brand as a senior in high school in Germany.
“I saw a 911 whale tail red turbo when I was in high school and immediately wanted one, but it was a bit out of my budget at the time,” he said.
“I rode motorcycles for years, and I decided I was going to die on one of those because I was too stupid. So I decided to buy a car – and when I did I chose a Porsche and got invited to do a track day with my local dealership.
“On my first track day, Patrick Long was there. We started talking about racing, and I went for a ride with him. I learned right then that I did not know how to drive a car!
“I wanted to set a path at that point to learn how to be a race driver – I haven’t gotten all the way there yet, and I’ll never get to Pat’s level – but I’m still pushing forward.”
ACI Motorsports has two race shops – one in Chattanooga and it’s second just outside of Road Atlanta. Swearingin’s Advanced Collision business has a total of eight locations and is certified to repair damaged road-going Porsches.
Swearingin is a busy man with nine race cars competing in 2024 on top of the eight collision centers – but what’s more, he also owns the World Racing League – an amateur endurance series that races at major venues across the country including Road America, Daytona, Charlotte, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen, Sebring, Mid-Ohio and more.
The secret to his success is building a good team of people to run the separate business ventures.
“We have a lot of good people on the collision side as well as the race team. Even with our World Racing League, having the right people is what it’s all about,” Swearingin said.
“We’re very pleased with our expansion in Carrera Cup, and our goal is certainly to chase championships – in Pro, Pro-Am, and Masters. The season started very well, and while there’s a long way to go, we hope to continue carrying the momentum through 2024 and into the future.”
EBOOST Porsche Motorsport North America Junior Program racer Jake Pedersen will team up with the Wisconsin-based Kellymoss squad for both his Porsche Carrera Cup North America and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge campaigns.
Pedersen will continue to race the No.85 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entry for the remainder of the season – continuing to showcase his self-designed “art on wheels” livery inspired by his musical icons. His first outing for Kellymoss will be at the upcoming Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix – the only round of the championship he missed last year.
The 23-year-old racer/student/musician also will continue to compete in IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge aboard a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport – lining up alongside his new coach, 13-time Carrera Cup North America race winner and Porsche Motorsport North America Selected Driver, Kay van Berlo.
Pedersen will be part of a seven-car squad for Kellymoss in Carrera Cup and a now expanded two-car team in Michelin Pilot Challenge that Kellymoss runs in conjunction with Riley Motorsports.
Former Carrera Cup rivals Riley Dickinson (2023 Pro Champion) and Michael McCarthy (2021 Porsche Sprint Challenge by Yokohama Champion) joined with Brady Golan to win the opening Michelin Pilot Challenge race of the season at Daytona International Speedway.
“I’ve already felt accepted into the family at Kellymoss. I’m fortunate to not only be competing in the same corner with them, but to be surrounded by the great people that constitute the team. To me, that is more valuable than anything,” said Pedersen.
“I look forward to working with Kay. It brings peace of mind to know that he has been in a similar boat of balancing school and racing, and has done a successful job.”
Van Berlo’s new Michelin Pilot Challenge campaign is in addition to his SRO GT America campaign. The Dutchman and ACI Motorsports boss Curt Swearingin finished second in the Sunday Pro-Am race recently at Sonoma Raceway.

Pedersen and van Berlo’s debut as a driver pairing in Michelin Pilot Challenge will take place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on May 10-12.

PenFed first became involved in Porsche Carrera Cup North America last year as a sponsor for Sabré Cook’s No. 37 entry and continues the sponsorship for the 2024 season.
