UPDATE: Hedge loses win after post-race penalty, giving Cole Kleck his first win in the series.
A chaotic and caution-filled second race at Road America produced breakthrough victories and continued winning streaks across all three classes, as Callum Hedge captured his long-awaited first Carrera Cup North America win while Patrick Mulcahy and Marco Cirone extended their championship momentum.
Pre-race featured a moment of silence to honor Gunnery Sergeant Joshua Zetzer, who served in the United States Marine Corps for 17 years of honorable service. Zetzer’s wife, Ashely, his son Jaxson, and other family members were in attendance at Road America, hosted by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors and PenFed Credit Union.
Stop-and-go race goes Hedge’s way
Hedge, a Porsche Carrera Cup Australia champion in 2023, started on the Race Brew pole after the fast lap in Friday morning’s race one. He lost the Mobil Pro class and overall lead to second-starting Cole Kleck of TOPP Racing going into Turn One, dropping to second.
While that was happening, championship leader Tyler Maxson slowed dramatically after his front-left suspension suffered damage. Contact in Turn Five on that same opening lap between a Pro-Am and Masters class car brought out the first of four safety car periods and slowed the field.
The field failed to complete a full green flag lap after the next two restarts. First, Chris Bellomo made contact with the wall in Turn Three. the third caution period cleared only for Pro class drivers Paul Bocuse and Sabré Cook to collide in Turn Five, ending their day earlier than planned.
With eight minutes and 30 seconds remaining, the race restarted for the final time. That was all Hedge needed to take the lead, going around Kleck in Turn Six with just four laps to go. Once in front Hedge finished the job, coming home 2.479 seconds in front of Kleck.
The win was the first for Hedge in North America, who crossed the finish line first in Miami but was assessed a time penalty post-race to fall to ninth.
Janne Stiak (ACI Motorsports) held off Aaron Jeansonne (Kellymosss) to finish third, with Jared Thomas (JTR Motorsports Engineering) fifth.
“A lot of the restarts were a little bit frustrating when I wanted to get by Cole,” Hedge said of the stop and go race. “Big thanks to the JDX crew, they work so hard. We’ve had a couple of wins taken away from us, so it’s about time we got paid.”
Mulcahy’s nine lives.
ACI Motorsports driver Patrick Mulcahy is on a remarkable hot streak in the Solairus Aviation Pro-Am class. He has a perfect record in 2026 through the first nine races of the season.
Mulcahy started on the class pole based on his fast lap during Friday morning’s race one, and then led wire to wire including the class fast lap in the afternoon.
“It was fantastic,” Mulcahy said. “Anytime I can run up front it’s a good thing. I wish it was a bit of a cleaner race, I ran into some stuff with another driver on track. It was just trying to stay alive and move up as fast as possible.”
Mulcahy finished eighth overall in addition to his class win.
Cirone doubles in Masters.
Marco Cirone brought yet another win home for ACI Motorsports, sweeping Friday’s races in the Solairus Masters class.
Like Friday morning, Cirone found himself in a battle with Rob Walker (JTR Motorsports Engineering) over the final green flag stint. Cirone was able to pull away in the closing laps, crossing the line two seconds in front of Walker and 3.5 seconds in front of third place Richard Edge. The Masters podium finished 9th, 10th, and 11th overall, a season best for all three drivers.
“I would definitely prefer a 40-minute clean race,” Cirone said. “I’m glad everyone is ok and that’s racing. I’m glad to be up here with my teammate (Mulcahy). We actually had some fun, I was following him and he taught me a few things. Thank you to the ACI team and Mark Motors back home, and it’s nice to be up here.”
Rescheduled Miami Race 2 set for Saturday showdown.
The Porsche Carrera Cup North America field will return to the track at 8:50 a.m. CT on Saturday to complete the rescheduled Race 2 from the Miami Grand Prix weekend. With valuable championship points still up for grabs, competitors will have one final opportunity to add to their totals before departing Road America.
